U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will give remarks at the 50th annual Progressive National Baptist Convention tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. ET at the Washington Marriott Wardman Hotel in D.C. Duncan will discuss education as the civil rights issue of our generation and give an overview of the administration's education reform agenda along with the Education Department's work to increase access to a high-quality education.
Progressive National Baptist is a historic civil rights and social justice organization with over 2.5 million members worldwide. Its annual convention brings together members and distinguished leaders to celebrate and discuss progressive social issues impacting the African American community. This year's event, themed, "Ready to Secure the Future," opened yesterday, Tuesday, Aug. 9, with sessions taking place through Friday, Aug. 12.
