U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will join Assistant Deputy Secretary Jim Shelton at a press conference for the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) release of an arts education study at 9 a.m., ET, Monday, April 2 at Miner Elementary School in Washington, D.C. Duncan will discuss the importance of arts education in providing students a well-rounded education.
The NCES study, “Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools: 1999-2000 and 2009-10,” presents selected findings from seven Congressionally-mandated arts in education surveys. The surveys were designed to provide national estimates of the characteristics of arts education in public K-12 schools for the 2009-10 school year and to allow comparison to selected estimates from an earlier study done in 1999-2000. The report provides national data about arts education for public elementary and secondary schools, elementary classroom teachers, and elementary and secondary music and visual arts specialists.
