Jim Shelton, assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement, will address parents attending the Tavis Smiley Foundation’s “Too Important to Fail: Parent Education Summit” Saturday at Spelman College in Atlanta.

Shelton’s remarks will focus on the pressing need to build pathways of educational opportunity from birth to college and career for America’s children. He will also discuss the responsibility that parents, schools and policymakers share in ensuring each child has an excellent education.

The Parent Education Summit is a grassroots parental engagement program designed to help parents learn how they can support the educational development of their children. The event offers free workshops, resource information and is open to the public.

As assistant deputy secretary, Shelton’s Office of Innovation and Improvement makes strategic investments in innovative educational programs and administers more than 25 discretionary grant programs. Among them: the Charter Schools Program; Fund for the Improvement of Education; Parental Options and Information; Technology in Education; and Teacher Quality Programs.
