On Wed., May 9, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Department staff are participating in “ED Goes Back to School.” Over 45 U.S. Department of Education staff will shadow teachers in the D.C. area and across the country. The shadowing visits will offer Department staff an inside look at teachers’ day-to-day work, while also giving teachers the opportunity to discuss how federal policy, programs and resources play a role in their classrooms. Later in the day Duncan will invite teachers being shadowed and their shadowers to a discussion at U.S. Department of Education headquarters, so the group can debrief and reflect on the experience.

Wednesday evening, Duncan will give remarks at the Teach for America 2nd Annual Gala at 7:15 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Duncan will honor teachers, including those in the TFA corps, leading the transformation of their profession. The theme for the annual event is “Leadership Changing Lives” and the evening will focus on stories of inspiration from TFA members and partners and the work underway to support students in low-income communities.
