U.S. Under Secretary Ted Mitchell will travel to New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 30, to participate in “The Economist’s Education Forum: Reconnecting Education to the Workforce,” and take part in several roundtable discussions at LaGuardia Community College.
At 9:05 a.m. ET, Mitchell will have a conversation with John Prideaux, the Economist’s Washington correspondent, about the current and future state of higher education and how it can best achieve its goals of closing the skills gap and producing better student outcomes.
The conference will convene some 200 leaders in the field of higher education from across a variety of fields, including private innovators, public policymakers, and non-governmental funders.
Mitchell will then travel to Long Island City for a series of events at LaGuardia Community College. At 11 a.m. ET, he will participate in a roundtable with President Gail Mellow, her staff, students, and business partners, to hear about some of the school’s innovative programs, such as E-Portfolio, First Year Experience, and skills training and job placement programs with employers.
After a campus tour led by a student, at 12:15 p.m. ET Mitchell will participate in a roundtable with 15 students to get a deeper understanding of how LaGuardia is helping their students prepare for the future.
While at LaGuardia, Mitchell will also meet with higher education leaders from the CUNY college system for a conversation about the Obama Administration’s higher education initiatives. All of the CUNY schools have been invited to participate.
