U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter will be a panelist at a one-day conference sponsored by Harvard Law School, Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools: "Civics Education: Why it Matters to Democracy, Society and You" at 10:30 a.m. ET on Monday, April 1, in Cambridge, Mass. The panel is entitled: "Practice: What Barriers Stand in the Way of Better Civic Learning?"
The symposium brings together luminaries and practitioners to discuss the importance of civic learning and explore ways to advance the way we prepare young people to participate in democracy. Conference participants include former Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and David Souter;Kenneth Starr, president of Baylor University; and Harvard professors Lawrence Tribe and Howard Gardner, among others.
