In the afternoon, Secretary Duncan will visit the City Year Headquarters where he will hold a conversation on the role of national service in education with 140 City Year Boston corps members. City Year corps members serve full-time as tutors, mentors and role models in high-need schools in 21 locations around the country, focused on improving attendance, behavior and course performance in math and English. In Boston, 140 corps members serve in 10 schools, helping students stay in school and on track to graduation. Michael Brown and Vice President and Executive Director of City Year Boston Sandra Lopez Burke will join the Secretary during his Friday visit.
In the evening, Secretary Duncan will attend the Phillips Brooks House Association’s 2010 “Robert Coles ‘Call of Service’ Lecture and Award.” Every year, the Phillips Brooks House honors a significant leader in public service.
