U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will deliver keynote remarks at a symposium to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday in Washington, D.C. Duncan will highlight TRIO’s goals and discuss efforts to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds and first–generation college students pursue a higher education.

During the symposium, Celebrating 50 Years of Promoting Excellence by Providing Hope and Opportunity for Success, the Secretary will be joined by U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD), as well as current TRIO students, alumni and TRIO program directors from across the country. There will also be several panel discussions to reflect on TRIO’s half century of changing lives through education and discuss its role moving forward.

The Federal TRIO Programs consists of seven outreach and student services programs that assist low-income individuals and first-generation college students to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs, and one training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.
