U.S. Education Secretary to Address National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Participate in Education Town Hall in Indianapolis

Education Secretary Arne Duncan will visit Indianapolis for two events on Friday, April 15. At 11 a.m. EDT, he will address the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Duncan will talk about the importance of math education and hold a question-and-answer session on the need to recruit and train more highly qualified math teachers. He will also discuss the impact of the common core standards initiative led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State Schools Officers.

In the afternoon, Duncan will join Gov. Mitch Daniels for an education town hall summit with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, students, parents, community members and local legislators. Duncan will discuss the need to fix No Child Left Behind and address the Department’s overall education reform efforts. The town hall will be held at the Charles A. Tindley School at 1:15 p.m. EDT. A media availability will be held following the event from 2:50-3 p.m.
