U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will address the American Society of News Editors' 2013 national convention Tuesday in Washington. Duncan will discuss the value of news literacy in a changing world, as well as correcting myths and falsehoods about the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
So far, 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the new standards in a state-led effort organized by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. States have come together to develop the standards which are rigorous enough to prepare students for the real world and include the knowledge and skills that young people must learn to succeed in college and career.
More than 200 newspaper editors and reporters, journalism professors and others are expected to attend the convention.
