Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller will deliver remarks at the 2011 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS® National Competition at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6, at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel. Miller will discuss the importance of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education and the accomplishments of the ‘Mathletes®.’ Miller will also join Pam Wickham, chair of the MATHCOUNTS® board to present medals to top 3 winning MATHCOUNTS® teams.
The audience will include more than 200 middle school math students from around the country and their teachers, parents and Raytheon company executives. Finalists competing at this year’s national competition advanced beyond more than 100,000 middle school students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, Department of Defense schools and State Department schools, to win their school, local and state competitions. The Raytheon MATHCOUNTS® National Competition is the culmination of the MATHCOUNTS® enrichment and coaching program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement throughout the country.
