U.S. Department of Education to Hold Forum on High-Quality Stem Education for English Learners in Washington, DC

Rosalinda B. Barrera, assistant deputy secretary and director of the Office of English Language Acquisition, today announced that the U.S. Department of Education will hold a forum on “High-Quality STEM Education for English Learners” at 8:30 a.m. on July 11, at the Holiday Inn Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The forum is designed to highlight effective practices for promoting English Learners (ELs) achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects; examine data and research needs on ELs’ STEM learning and achievement; and explore possibilities for public-private partnerships to advance reform in STEM education for ELs.

The meeting will be facilitated by Dr. Okhee Lee, Science Professor at the University of Miami, and Mr. Jose Franco, Senior Research Associate at WestEd. U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) will give opening remarks.

Input collected from the meetings will help guide technical assistance and policy development in this area.
