U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary Carl Harris will participate in the Department’s 2011 Math and Science Partnerships (MSP) Conference on Tuesday, March 22, in San Francisco. He will provide an overview of the School Improvement Grants for MSP grantees and offer information on possible ways grantees can support school turnaround work.

School Improvement Grants are part of the $3.5 billion that states received last year to turn around its lowest-performing schools. Funds were distributed by formula to states, and then competed out by states to school districts. In order for a school district to apply for the funds, it had to have a state-identified “persistently lowest achieving” school—one that had failed to meet adequate yearly progress (AYP) for two consecutive years.
