Peter Cunningham, assistant secretary of communications and outreach, and Jim Shelton, assistant deputy secretary of the Office of Innovation and Improvement, will join former U.S. Education Secretary Richard Riley, former New York Yankee Bernie Williams and National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) President Joe Lamond to host an event celebrating and supporting national music programs on Tuesday, May 10. Music students from George Fox Middle School and Lime Kiln Middle School will perform at the event, which will take place at 11 a.m. on the plaza at the U.S. Department of Education Lyndon Baines Johnson building in Washington, D.C.
The event will highlight the benefits of music programs for students, both in school and after school. Attendees will have a chance to participate in a public drum and ukulele circle to experience playing music first-hand. NAMM is a not-for-profit association that unifies, leads and strengthens the international musical instruments and products industry. NAMM’s activities and programs are designed to promote music making to people of all ages.
