Senior U.S. Education Official Libia Gill to Keynote Colorado Association of Bilingual Education Annual Conference

Libia Gil, assistant deputy secretary and director of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition, will deliver the keynote address to the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education’s annual conference Wednesday in Westminster, Colorado.

Gil will discuss the Department’s efforts to ensure English learners have equitable academic opportunities, effective teachers and reliable learning assessments.

As director, Gil is the principal adviser to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on all matters related to the education of English learners, now estimated to be about 10 percent of the total K-12 enrollment nationwide.  Her Office of English Language Acquisition provides national leadership to help ensure that English learners and immigrant students attain English proficiency and achieve academically.
