Senior U.S. Department of Education Official to Highlight Importance of Great Teaching

WHAT:

Visit to two Cincinnati Public District (CPS) schools by Amy McIntosh, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Delegated the Duties of the Assistant Secretary, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development for the U.S. Department of Education, on Wednesday, May 4, during Teacher Appreciation Week. McIntosh, a Cincinnati native, will observe teachers at Rockdale Academy during the morning and in the afternoon will moderate a panel discussion at Withrow High School of finalists for the 2016 Hawkins Outstanding Educator of the Year Award from Western & Southern Financial Group, which will be announced tonight.

As part of the U.S. Department of Education’s emphasis on the importance of excellent teaching to bridge opportunity gaps and strengthen the quality of the nation’s schools, McIntosh will visit two CPS schools during Teacher Appreciation Week. McIntosh oversees policy development on all aspects of education from preschool through higher education for the U.S. Department of Education. Previously, she spent three years in the New York State Education Department focusing on strategies to improve the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders. She also served for six years at the New York City Department of Education, helping to shape successful reforms for the country’s largest public school system.
