John King, senior advisor delegated duties of deputy secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education, along with Vanita Gupta, principal deputy assistant attorney general, head of the Civil Rights Divisionat the U.S. Department of Justice, will announce the completion of the English Learner (EL) Tool Kit on Monday, Sept. 21, in Washington, D.C.

The tools and resources in the tool kit are intended to support our nation's public schools, which serve over five million EL students–about 10 percent of all public school students. The tool kit is designed to accompany the guidance letter issued jointly with the U.S. Department of Justice in January 2015, which reminded states, school districts and schools of their obligations under federal law to ensure that EL students have equal access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential.
