Senior officials from the U.S. Department of Education will participate in a conference Tuesday in Washington, D.C., on the topic, "Equity in Schools: The Future of School Discipline"
The event, co-sponsored by the Education Department and the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality, is aimed at spotlighting recent reforms in school discipline policies and practices and highlighting the need for promising approaches that assure equitable discipline in America's schools.
In January, the Education and Justice departments announced a school discipline guidance package to enhance school climate and improve school discipline policies and practices. The package provides resources for creating safe and positive school climates, which are essential for boosting student academic success and closing achievement gaps.
