U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. will visit Escuela Su Dr. Arturo Morales Carrión School in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Monday, March 28, and hold a roundtable with students, teachers and school leaders. The roundtable will focus on the successes and challenges in turning around the school. Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla and Secretary of Education Rafael Román Meléndez will join King.
In 2014, to help improve outcomes for students, the school received a more than $12.1 million School Improvement Grant (SIG) from the U.S. Department of Education. The grants are awarded to states that then make competitive subgrants to those school districts that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use them to substantially raise student achievement in their lowest-performing schools. Many SIG schools across the country have shown positive momentum and significant progress.
