U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will discuss the results of an international assessment on student financial literacy Wednesday at a conference hosted by George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
For the first time, a financial literacy component was included in the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Secretary Duncan will offer his reaction to the findings and his thoughts on how well America’s 15-year-old students understand financial concepts, followed by a moderated discussion with John Rogers, chair of the President’s Advisory Council for Financial Capability for Young Americans.
The Education Department and administration have stressed the importance of the nation’s students and adults understanding the basics of financial education, such as balancing a checkbook, saving for a child’s education, steering clear of deceptive practices, planning for retirement and avoiding excessive debt.
