U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will travel to Arizona Wednesday where he will deliver the commencement address at Arizona State University and hold a roundtable discussion with Phoenix-area school principals.

Secretary Duncan will begin his visit at 1 p.m. MST with a roundtable dialogue featuring more than a dozen Phoenix-area principals discussing the new Teach to Lead initiative announced in March. The joint project of the Education Department and National Board of Professional Teaching Standards seeks to inspire fundamental changes in the culture of schools and teaching so that teachers play a more central role in transforming teaching and learning, and in the development of policies that affect their work.

A media availability will follow at 2:10 p.m. MST.

That evening, the secretary will hold another media availability at 6:30 p.m. MST at the Ed and Nadine Carson Student-Athlete Center adjacent to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.

Later at 7:30 p.m. MST, he will deliver the commencement address for Arizona State’s spring 2014 undergraduate ceremony. More than 10,000 graduates, their families, friends and others are expected at Sun Devil Stadium.
