Acting Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots will join U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Tuesday, April 22, in announcing via webcast the 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees. Forty-eight schools are being honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways. In addition, nine districts will be honored for the District Sustainability Award. Secretary Duncan is also expected to announce a new award category.
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) initiative was announced in September 2011 and now features resources and webinars for all schools and districts to use on its Green Strides portal, as well as an annual best practices tour. U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools and District Sustainability Awardees are recognized for reducing their energy use and environmental impact, creating healthy learning environments, and providing effective environmental education that prepares students to succeed in the 21st century.
