Deputy Secretary of Education Jim Shelton will participate in a discussion at the U.S. News STEM Solutions National Leadership Conference on Wednesday April 23, 2014 in Washington DC. Shelton will discuss the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to prepare students for future careers in the field. Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer, U.S. News & World Report, will act as moderator for the discussion.
This year’s conference will focus on how to develop the pipeline of talent needed to fill current and future jobs requiring STEM skills. The conference brings together STEM experts, advocates, and stakeholders in an outcome-focused forum. Events at the conference include keynote sessions and roundtable discussions with STEM experts and students.
The Obama administration is committed to providing students at every level with the skills they need to excel in the high-paid, highly-rewarding STEM fields. The goal is to move American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math achievement with an “all hands on deck” approach, bringing together government, industry, non-profits, philanthropy and others working together. As part of that goal, President Obama has called for the nation to recruit and retain 100,000 high-quality STEM teachers over the next decade.
