Catherine E. Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Education, will address the Education Trust’s National Conference Thursday in Baltimore. The theme of the conference is “Become the Change: Closing Gaps in Opportunity and Achievement.”
Lhamon will discuss the Department’s efforts to ensure that students of color have equitable access to educational resources. As assistant secretary, Lhamon heads the Office for Civil Rights whose mission is to ensure equal access to education and promote educational excellence throughout America through vigorous enforcement of civil rights.

The Department of Education’s work is focused on ensuring all students receive an education that prepares them for success in life and their career, through programs including Race to the Top, ConnectED, School Improvement Grants, as well as ED's work to expand access to preschool and make college more affordable.
