Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier, who heads the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, will visit Seattle’s Cleveland STEM High School on Tuesday, spotlighting the school’s transformation efforts aimed at promoting educational excellence for its students.
The school has redesigned itself into one that focuses especially on the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. By creating strong linkages between what students learn in classrooms and what they will need to know for college and careers, Cleveland High is beginning to incorporate some of the core elements that the Education Department is calling for as part of its high school redesign initiative.
As previewed in President Obama’s State of the Union address, the administration is proposing $300 million for a new High School Redesign program, which would fund competitive grants to districts partnering with postsecondary institutions, businesses and non-profits to help ensure that all students graduate from high school with college credit and career-related experience.
Assistant secretary Dann-Messier administers the Education Department's programs in adult, career and technical education, as well as community colleges and correctional education.
