Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier will deliver the commencement address at the completion ceremonies for East Valley Institute of Technology Tuesday in Mesa, Ariz. East Valley serves as the career training center for high school students in 10 school districts. It also provides opportunities for adults who wish to continue or enhance their education. The programs are tuition-free for high school students and provide adult education classes at competitive tuition rates.
As assistant secretary, Dann-Messier heads the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, leading the U.S. Department of Education's efforts in adult education, career and technical education, community colleges and correctional education. Her office administers 11 grant programs, totaling about $1.9 billion annually. In her remarks, she will encourage students to set high expectations for themselves as they embark upon their careers or further their education. Earlier in the day, Dann-Messier will tour the school and meet with students.
