Acting Under Secretary Jamienne Studley will deliver opening remarks at the second of three negotiated rulemaking sessions being convened by the U.S. Department of Education to focus on implementing the parts of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), signed by President Obama last March, that amend the Clery Act.
Studley's remarks will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, at 1990 K Street, N.W. in the 8th Floor Conference Center.
The committee meeting, which is open to the public, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, Monday – Tuesday, Feb. 24-25.
The VAWA Negotiated Rulemaking Committee is comprised of one federal negotiator from the Department's Office of Postsecondary Education and 14 non-federal negotiators representing a range of affected parties with experience and expertise on the subject matter, including from: students; legal assistance organizations that represent students; consumer advocacy organizations; campus safety advocates; mental health services; institutional campus safety officials; institutional student affairs/disciplinary divisions; institutional centers for women, lesbian, gay bisexual, and transgendered individuals; institutional attorneys; two and four year public institutions; private for profit and not profit institutions, and minority serving and other Title III institutions.
The committee is charged with providing input to help the Department craft a rule that will ensure that colleges and universities take action to prevent, respond promptly and effectively, and better protect the rights of students when incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking occur on our Nation's campuses.
