On Monday, July 1, Acting Deputy Secretary of Education Jim Shelton will participate in a panel discussion at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado. The panel, entitled Ready to Learn? Ready to Teach?, will discuss what the Common Core means to our nation's struggling schools.

So far, 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the new standards in a state-led effort organized by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. States have come together to develop the standards which are rigorous enough to prepare students for the real world and include the knowledge and skills that young people must learn to succeed in college and career.

Ross Weiner from The Aspen Institute will moderate the panel. Pamela Cantor from TurnAround for Children, Inc. will join Shelton on the panel.

More information about the panel is provided here.
