U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will deliver a keynote address at the 2012 NCAA Convention at Noon ET on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Later that day at 4:00 p.m. ET, Duncan will host a town hall on education and the economy with students and teachers at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center in Clayton, Ohio. Press availabilities will follow each event.

Duncan’s remarks at the NCAA will focus on encouraging college sports programs – especially major football and basketball programs – to strike a healthier balance between athletics and academics. He will appeal to college leaders to work collectively through the NCAA and conference leadership to do more to support the educational interests of student athletes, simplify NCAA rules, and develop speedier and better-targeted enforcement.

During the Ohio town hall, Duncan will discuss adult education and the role that career and technical training plays in rebuilding the economy. The Department’s Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education, Brenda Dann-Messier, will join the Secretary for the town hall.
