U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Assistant Secretary Russlynn Ali, along with officials in Los Angeles, will announce the successful resolution of the first proactive civil rights enforcement action taken by the U.S. Department of Education under the Obama Administration on a national press call TODAY, Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 5:35 p.m. ET. The call will follow the announcement this afternoon at LAUSD headquarters.
The “compliance review” of the Los Angeles Unified School District was launched in March 2010 to assess whether English Learner (EL) students were being denied equal educational opportunities. The probe was later expanded to investigate resource comparability for the District’s African-American students as compared to white students, particularly in racially concentrated African-American schools.
