Nearly $5.5 billion in Recovery Act funding has been approved for three states: $4 billion for California, $1.4 billion for Illinois, and $85.4 million for South Dakota. This money is available to states under the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, which, at $53.6 billion, is the largest pot of money for education in the Recovery Act. Five more states — Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oregon, and Utah — have applied. Also, earlier this month all 50 states received funding under Title I, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and several other formula grant programs.
